r/anime now has 10 million subscribers! Announcement

“God, 30,000 god-damn users. You all need lives.” -Neito, our father who art in weebdom, circa January 12th, 2012.

Hello, one and all, to 10 million subscribers!

10 million subscribers!

Today, what began as an ordinary pet project, as a home of discussions and questions, of rankings and contests, of rewatches and writing, of strangers and friends, of mods and users, lives 16 years later as r/anime!

Thanks to everyone who has chosen this subreddit to be a part of their anime experience. r/anime has always been a haven for people of all stripes to come together with one shared love: Japanese cartoons. Under this banner comes our love for animation, our passion for connection, and our squabbles for Fate watch orders. Thank you again to all 10 million subscribers for making this sub as special as the day it had only one.

Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be hosting a variety of fun events: Quiz, AMQs, comment face nomination, mod AMA, Who’s Line is it Anime, and more. Let’s take a quick peek at what’s happening:

Saturday, May 18: Who's Line is it Anime

It's the thread where the responses are made up and the points don't matter. That's right, we're bringing back the game from years before! Similar to the improv show Whose Line is it Anyway?, it'll be an arrangement of suggestions but with themes tied to anime, so come play the past favorite of the sub.

Sunday, May 19: AMQ Night

You know it, you love it, you hate it when it rolls your favorite show but you flub it with the wrong season, so come play some AMQ (Anime Music Quiz) hosted by the moderators!

Wednesday, May 22: r/anime's Favorite Anime Poll

After discovering r/anime's favorite openings, films, and tsunderes, famed chartographer /u/fetchfrosh is setting out for the Big Question: our favorite anime.

Friday, May 24 Tuesday, May 28th: 10 Million Subscriber Quiz (Video + Audio)

We can rebuild it. We have the technology. We can make it better than it was. Better, stronger, faster...okay, maybe not faster but the point remains, we've got a quiz combining aspects of the previous video and audio quizzes together into one spectacular bonanza!

Friday, May 31: Mod AMA

It's been a hot minute since we've opened an AMA up, so let's get ourselves out of our pajamas, break out the Rolodex, and start answering some questions.

Sunday, June 2: Niche Comment Face Nominations

After some spring cleaning from /u/badspler, we've got a few empty spaces left open on the ole comment face cabinet. Therefore, what better way to stock it back up than with nominations from you!

It's all that and a bag of chips, so stay tuned for all of these events and more!

Audio and video quiz need more time in the oven so that will now be coming Tuesday 5/28~! Apologies for the delay, but it will be worth it!

I think we may be one of the oldest active non-default communities. I made this sub back when you had to send a mail to the admins to make a sub, never thought it'd last a year. Us hitting 30k was huge back in the day, now 10k is like a day's worth of new subs.

It is still kind of hard to fathom just how many people watch these silly Japanese cartoons and want to chat about it here.

Huge milestone; get hype for the events!

59

u/Wimpykid2302 15d ago

These are the people just on the subreddit. Imagine how popular it has become world-wide

41

u/Disastrous_Channel62 15d ago

I still remember the time when this sub didn't even have a million sub but the rising popularity of anime has been so amazing that it has 10 million subs now

30

u/mythriz 15d ago

Man even after reading the title before clicking into the post, I forgot the zero and thought it was 1 million. 10 million is a lot, I wonder how many garbage posts the mods are deleting every day.

27

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 15d ago

I wonder how many garbage posts the mods are deleting every day.

Last month's statistics said the mods manually removed 1098 posts and 2407 comments (more were also removed by bots, though), so that's just shy of 117 manual removals per day, if I calculated that correctly?

3

u/Arterius_N7 https://myanimelist.net/profile/ArteriusN7 15d ago

A lot of that must be automod right?

18

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 15d ago

I'm pretty sure AutoMod's removals are part of the "more were also removed by bots" that I said (6732 more posts and 1679 more comments, according to the April report), so there is more but not part of the "~117 manual removals per day" number.

7

u/Arterius_N7 https://myanimelist.net/profile/ArteriusN7 15d ago

Well damn. Can't imagine sorting through all that stuff on a daily basis on my free time.

10

u/ZaphodBeebblebrox https://anilist.co/user/zaphod 15d ago

A lot of it's quite easy and takes like five seconds, so it's less than you'd first think.

16

u/beta_test_vocals https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 15d ago

Tbh I still can’t wrap my head around how big it’s gotten since quarantine. Even as recently as mid-late 2010s the opinions even talking to younger generations was either unawareness or some sort of weirded out/disgust response. I haven’t really paid attention to sub numbers here, but when I first started lurking here around I wanna say 2018 was it even a million subs yet?

I wonder what hobby the world will decide to pick up next time

2

u/Acceptable_Tie_3927 15d ago

how big it’s gotten since quarantine

I need to find out whether Katalin Kariko watches anime? (My mother was born in the same village as her.) Maybe she chipped the vaccines to spread love for Rona-chan?

Lots of good shows to love especially classic ones. Personally rewatching OG Legend of Galactic Heroes after finishing the reboots.

Pretty to filter out crappy isekai since the title just gives it away.

2

u/rapid0645 15d ago

Okay, but like fr. I feel like most ppl typically skip the isekai and just go straight to DS, JJK, and other mainstream stuff like that.

I refuse to believe the majority of animedom is just watching some vending machine pull baddies.

 our favorite anime

Looking forward to seeing what our favorite anime of the past TWO YEARS is!

Really though, any thoughts on mitigating recency bias in these polls, since we already do this in Best Girl contests?

42

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 15d ago

Based on the prior polls, I'm expecting it to be a 3 horse race between Steins;Gate, Bocchi the Rock and Frieren so a 2/3 chance the winner will be from the past 2 years.

27

u/Shan69420 15d ago

Previous polls make me think the top 3 is pretty much locked to Steins;Gate, AoT, and FMAB in whatever order. FMAB and Steins;Gate are both winners of the favorite anime bracket and AoT has come in 1st and 2nd in the two favorite anime of the 2010s polls.

16

u/beta_test_vocals https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 15d ago

I think you underestimate how quickly people have fallen head over heels for Frieren, I’m not gonna say it’s guaranteed first place but there is no chance all of those three series finish ahead of Frieren

12

u/oops_i_made_a_typi 15d ago

Count me in as someone that's fallen in love with Frieren. Obviously hard to judge an incomplete show vs 3 amazing completed series, though arguably the ending of AoT is a slight detractor, while Frieren's structure and style isn't quite as reliant on having a final ending. I will say that Frieren is the only show I have bought figures for.

3

u/beta_test_vocals https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 15d ago

Fair enough then. I think if this poll gets enough traction Steins Gate has no hope getting in top 3. Most post-quarantine anime fans haven’t seen Steins;Gate but pretty much everyone who would be participating in the poll has seen Frieren

4

u/oops_i_made_a_typi 15d ago

yeah I think S;G will be the one dropped from these 3, a lot of newer fans also might not have the patience for S;G's start (kinda ironic given that Frieren is also slow paced)

AoT and FMAB have the sheer length and popularity to stay up for a long time, though I do wonder how AoT's end will reflect in these results.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Shan69420 15d ago

I mean, the three anime I listed are also super popular on this subreddit (I'd argue more than Frieren), and have had more time to gather fans.

My prediction for Frieren would be around top 10, I don't think it reaches top 5. It would have a hard time overcoming fan favorites here like Kaguya Sama, Mob Psycho, Monogatari, and Re:Zero.

3

u/BiggieCheeseLapDog https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillLaKillGOAT 15d ago

I’m wondering where Monogatari is going to place. In the Steins Gate winner bracket it came second place, technically making it the 3rd favourite anime of r/anime. Since the anime fandom is bigger than ever and Monogatari is one of the less accessible shows out there, I’m curious where it will rank since it’s my favourite. I hope it gets at least top ten. It winning best ED gives me hope that it’s popularity hasn’t lessened too much.

I definitely wouldnt mind it since i love oshi no ko but if there is one very recent anime that would rank very high here it will probably be frieren .. now the only question is how it will do against fmab and steins gate

Great question, apparently reliving my childhood lol, I can mostly be found in /r/2007scape, /r/neopets, and /r/girlgamers recently!

But in real life, I bought my first house with my boyfriend last year and we adopted two kittens. I work in a very corporate role (account management) and do art commissions on the side, mostly for vtubers! :)

And I'm still watching anime, although nowhere near as much! I keep my MAL updated and I recently really loved Frieren ^ ^

Lmao, its funny because I joined this sub at the peak of my teenage years and I don't think my takes have changed at all. I may be more jaded now but what I like is still pretty much the same.

Heck, some may argue I got cringier as I got older because I got into mahou shoujo for children and became more acceptant of ecchi in anime.

seeing how much my taste has changed.

But has it improved?

Happy 10mil!

Not sure how many people are aware but we did /r/anime's favourite anime 9 years ago as well, the bracket is actually quite interesting despite the fact the winner wasn't much of a a surprise lol

If you're newer to anime, you might find some good stuff in there that's less recommended now ^ ^

21

u/porpoiseoflife https://myanimelist.net/profile/OffColfax 15d ago

It took about two years to reach that mark. I joined in October 2012, so I don't know much about the times before that.

This place was very different when it was smaller. You saw the same names and knew the basics about certain people. But it was also a more abrasive place, particularly with a few prominent users. There was also barely anything involving a spoiler policy enforcement, so everywhere you looked was a minefield if you wanted to go into anime blind.

3

u/Nebresto 14d ago

You saw the same names and knew the basics about certain people.

I don't think this it that different even now. With the volume of users its definitely a lot more challenging, but you can still find a lot of the same names posting in episode discussion threads with their own quirks and what not. And I don't just mean people familiar from CDF, they're actually a minority in episode threads nowadays

I've only been using the subreddit for a bit over half it's existence, but it's crazy how fast this community has grown, yet change cultures in a more linear fashion. It's sad no longer seeing the same ratio of familiar faces around, but equally good seeing more and more people participating.

I'll always maintain the episode discussion threads to be the best thing to come out of the reddit community, and it's rare to see even the niche shows with empty threads since there's 10 million of us!

Homura which is very fitting for her character. I think /u/fetchfrosh adjusted the contest from Best Girl to Worst Girl after we reached the Round of 16 so all of the actual worst girls had already been eliminated.

But I gotta say, even though I rarely have much to say, I love the seasonal episode discussions every week, reading everyone’s thoughts and speculation. They make the hobby even more fun!

We’re a huge sub, but I still get the sense of community like it’s a smaller sub.

I have definitely not been on this sub as long as others, nor am I a big face here, but I'm grateful to have this sub, not just as part of my anime experience but routine as well.

Simply waiting for the next episode in an airing show I'm interested in so I can discuss it, as well as posting random clips or Video Edits, gives me motivation to get from week to week. If only I discovered that earlier but too late for regrets.

It's great to see this sub hit 10 million!

I'm kinda shocked only around 100 people were banned since you can get banned for posting spoilers

5

u/N7CombatWombat 15d ago

It's often the case that it's the same people posting multiple comments with untagged spoilers in episode discussion threads, and sometimes we do give people a pass if they're nice about it and make an effort to correct the issue.

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 15d ago

Last month had about 42k people commenting but reddit in general has encouraged a shift to a more passive consumption style in recent years and to my knowledge subscribers are never pruned so I'm sure there's a ton of dead accounts included there.

r/anime now has 10 million subscribers

... and 9.99 million of them haven't seen Girls Band Cry, the Kemono Friends of 2024. What a shame! (Btw, the remaining 10k have strong Rs, either for french or for arghhh...)

Happy 10 Million subscribers weebs!

5

u/KendotsX https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kendots 15d ago

Congratulations!

I hope to participate in as many of those events as possible and the Eizouken rewatch now that it's above the legal age

5

u/stationtracks 15d ago

Congrats! Does anyone have a list of dates or a chart of subscriber count over time? I'm curious when milestones like 100,000/1,000,000 subscribers were reached.

Brief History big final surprise of the 10 Mil celebration, I’m sure of it

u/DurdenVsDarkoVsDevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/U18810227 15d ago

This place doesn't feel a single soul bigger than 2019. Wild.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

2

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 15d ago

See, I knew that would be a handy page to have around. Plenty of older things that can be added to it too.

Still waiting for the cleanup at the bottom of that page though.

It's an impressive milestone. I've only been around for ~4 years as far as I can remember, so I'm not particularly old... but it's been pretty chill. I have a vague memory of seeing the post for 2M subs (which I might well be hallucinating lol), not sure about 1M.

I first heard about r/anime a few years before that though, as I remember hearing about drama related to a particular music video. Good times, good times.

(Also, I used Google to find out my first comment here, it seems to have been in Fall 2020. That would track for the 2M milestone!)

In any case:

Been here for way too long >10 years

Between me being on/off a lot and making a lot of mildly good & bad takes, it's great to see this sub grow as it has.

10 million!

But it's still wild that it took like 10 years to 1 million & 5 years to hit 10 million, it always makes me wonder how many lurkers we actually have (we did have 6.3 million visitors), as we usually get like ~50k unique commenters a month.

AMQ Night

AMQ is always fun time. Is there a time set for it already?

Niche Comment Face Nominations

Can we nominate the faces that were deleted but we want to see back?

3

u/DurdenVsDarkoVsDevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/U18810227 15d ago

Do we get the extended history of /r/anime this time?

3

u/Potential_Fee3107 15d ago

We’ve been waiting since we hit the 1 million subscriber milestone!

3

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan 14d ago

Damn. I remember when we got our first 1M subscribers and that felt like a huge milestone, now 10M? That's mind-boggling. I'm sure there are a lot of inactive users and whatnot, but still!

Congrats, r/anime!

10 million users!

What an insane number. Grateful to be apart of the fun!

2

u/Nick_BOI 15d ago

I can't recall when I joined, but I know its been years.

Regardless, as much shit as I give this place, there is so much more that i enjoy. From news, to discussions, to awards, to polls, never a dull moment here.

I really want to applaud the mods, community, and everyone else involved for keeping this place feeling like a community for so long and for giving me the deserved shit for my trash taste in anime.

Dunno how long all this will be around for, but I can say I don't see myself dipping anytime soon.

Also if JoJo doesn't get top 10 in our favorite anime you all will find me down in the salt mines.

I'm looking forward to the AMQ night.

Thank you for bringing anime quiz back. I was worried that it would be gone forever and my life would lose all meaning. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

1

u/chumyxin 15d ago

Wow 10m sub! Congrats.

1

u/OkChicken7697 15d ago

A shame no one ever really looks at mod posts like this celebrating milestones and such.

1

u/ItzyaboiElite https://myanimelist.net/profile/ItzElite 15d ago

Wow, already at 10 million, so happy to see how much anime has grown over the past 4-5 yrs

1

u/Muted-Conference2900 15d ago edited 15d ago

Does anybody know who made this sub reddit? One of the best decisions I must say by that guy.

7

u/N7CombatWombat 15d ago

Neito created it, and they're still on the mod team, the oldest active mod account among us. Fun fact, the list of mods you see on the side bar are ranked by how long we've been a mod (minus the bots, there are ways to reorder that list, but ours are ranked by time as a mod).

8

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 15d ago edited 15d ago

the list of mods you see on the side bar are ranked by how long we've been a mod

With I think Fan being the one exception to the time listed on the mod page following the occasion Neito got hacked and the hacker kicked the rest of the mod team.

Edit: also people leaving and returning like Fetch only have their most recent tenure counted.

3

u/Lev559 https://anime-planet.com/users/Lev559 15d ago

Yeah, from what I understand r/anime basically asks you to step down if you are to busy to do mod stuff right? Which is why most of the mods have only been mods for less than 2 years

7

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 15d ago

There's been a lot of turnover at various points for various reasons. The activity requirement came into being in 2019, a number of long-term mods (including me) quit last year because of Reddit's API nonsense.

3

u/Lev559 https://anime-planet.com/users/Lev559 15d ago

I kinda get that. In the first place Modding on the app is terrible, although they have made some improvements

3

u/Muted-Conference2900 15d ago

Thanks for answering.

Also Thanks to Neito.

1

u/avoteforatishon2016 15d ago

1

I’m surprised there is only 10million of us on reddit…

1

u/GrowRoots 15d ago

👏👏👏

1

u/Plah1sh357 15d ago

Wow 10m already! If i remember correctly when i joined this sub 5 years ago there were only close to 2m users. Simply incredible growth!

1

u/North514 15d ago

I remember when this subreddit only had 1 million members. Crazy how fast it grew.

1

u/Trebel- 15d ago

y’all remember staring at that 2M for a while? for some reason i specifically remember 2.4M and then after that it just shot up. funny

1

u/GreateProtim 15d ago

Congratulations /r/anime

1

u/Emircan61_TURKEY 15d ago

Damn this is a huge milestone! I wonder what's next from this point forward.

1

Getting into anime was one of the best decisions I've ever made, and this sub has made it super easy. Congrats, and here's to 10 million more

1

u/Known_Bed_8000 15d ago

Congratulations! I can't wait for the Favorite Anime poll.

1

u/ImRinKagamine 15d ago

Where's the memes tho

1

u/BluePhantomHere 15d ago

1

u/jojoismyreligion 15d ago

Even back in 2021 i remember this sub had like 3 million subs. It's really got a huge boost in just a couple years.

1

u/tehcharizard https://anilist.co/user/Lv100Pidgeot 15d ago

Neat. The first time I came here, there were 33k users. That sure was a while ago.

1

u/Weewoofiatruck 15d ago

Genuine question, because all of my friends in Japan believe this is a silly thought.

But if a cartoon is made in america, can it be called an anime? This has been a hot debate, but all of my Japanese friends think it's absolutely silly. They say the amazing spider man, king of the hill, avatar last air bender are all animes.

To them, it doesn't matter where it comes from. So long as it's 2D and animated.

I understand anime is a quick reference to a genre of cartoons, but to them it's a term for all cartoons.

So if anime has to be made in Japan, who made this rule?

5

u/N7CombatWombat 15d ago

Not really the place for your question, but to answer it, "anime" as a term is used outside Japan to refer to Japanese animated media (some people widen that term to be any animated feature with Japanese elements, though, that usually just boils down to more mature stories not aimed at children). Because in Japan, all animation is anime, so when people outside the country started watching, they'd see Japanese people refer to it as "anime" and it just stuck due to not understanding the context. There were actually some other names for it before the term anime became ubiquitous with Japanese animation in the US, with the most famous one being "Japanimation". And now it's kind of a staple to use that countries language word for animation to define it outside that country. So donghua for Chinese animation and aeni for Korean animation. It's just for classification purposes used primarily by people outside said countries.

1

u/maileaf 15d ago

I'm not a subscriber but the nichijou Pic brought me here

1

u/AdOnly8584 15d ago

Crazy how the number of people subbed just keep increasing yet the amount of karma an episode thread can get is lower than ever

2

u/DeathGamer99 15d ago

The incentive is now lower when award post system is gone back to pre of system also it's better to count using daily active user

1

u/SwampyBogbeard 15d ago

I've been commenting here for 10 years, but to be honest... I've never seen the point in actually subscribing.
I check the sub every day anyway.

1

u/oncetwiceandthrice- 15d ago

Hey, what an achievement! congratulations!! 🎉🎉🥳

1

u/Sindrawolf 15d ago

Shoutout to the people who remember when we had less than r/manga. Seems like an eternity ago now

1

u/jinjoon https://myanimelist.net/profile/jinjoon 15d ago

Been lurking for 10 years here, a lot has changed over that time. 10 million is a crazy number but cool to see a few familiar names from back when I joined.

1

u/alotmorealots 15d ago

Many congratulations to the sub, the mod teams and members past, present and future, and Automod-chan as well as Autolovepon for their tireless work.

Long may this be The Place!

1

u/ozairh18 15d ago

10 million subscribers is insane

1

u/Potential_Fee3107 15d ago

Does this mean we’ll finally get the “Brief history of r/anime” post now?
