Politics megathread U.S. Politics Megathread
It's an election year, so it's no surprise that politics are on everyone's minds!
Over the past few months, we've noticed a sharp increase in questions about politics. Why is Biden the Democratic nominee? What are the chances of Trump winning? Why can Trump even run for president if he's in legal trouble? There are lots of good questions! But, unfortunately, it's often the same questions, and our users get tired of seeing them.
As we've done for past topics of interest, we're creating a megathread for your questions so that people interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!
All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be civil to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Why do Americans say, "I'm from, (city/state)" instead of USA?
I've met many people from all ethnicities across Europe. When asked where a person is from they'd say, Iraq or smn basically a country. But Americans told me, "San Jose"? Is there a specific reason for this?
Edit: I do not mean to shame Americans for these replies and it is simply a very innocent question to understand if any cultural difference play a role here. English isn't my first language so I can understand why my question may come off as aggressive.

Adults: How many days per week do you drink alcohol?
I’m curious how often people are drinking these days? For years I would drink 2-3 times per week- and now I’m closer to 6-7. Is it just me?

If you cant read, can you serve in any form of USA military services?
Rant Context. My neighbor tells people he was in Afghanistan at some point, but he cant read, has never had a job, has lived with his Mother+inherited her house ever since i lived here (15+ years), tosses shit in my yard, tried to feed my dog moth balls, has called me derogatory terms when confronted, brought up his rank before and even more. He just doesnt fit the bill at all. I want to call him out since hes a self absorbed dick and its incredibly disrespectful if hes lying about that too. Petty? sure.
Just focousing on the reading, would someone who cant read ever be able to join any type of US forces?

Americans, do you add beans to your chili?
Chili originated in Mexico after the Spanish colonizers brought cattle. It did not contain beans.
However, I love kidney beans (porotos rojos), so I add them bastards. It’s delicious.
Just wondering how many Americans add beans. My ex-husband, who is Mexican, is adamant to not add beans. 🫘 imma do it still.

Can anyone explain the Taylor Swift hysteria? She has pretty good songs, but i can't really comprehend what makes her stand out so massively from other artists.

I am a formerly Morbidly Obese Man (now just Obese), I am going on my first date at age 28. What do I do?
Hello, as the title suggests, I used to be morbidly obese at 350 pounds. I joined a gym 2 years ago and lost 130 pounds and am now 220 pounds so I’m still obese, but less obese than before and not in as much risk of dying. I also put some muscle on. I met a woman at my gym a year or so ago and she gave me props for losing weight (at that time it was 70 pounds) and we became friendly.
Obviously I thought she was very good looking but I was still morbidly obese and had no idea what to do nor did I want to ask her out because of my obesity.
A Year later I lost some more weight and just thought fuck it I’ll ask her out, and she said yes.
I am honestly in a little disbelief because honestly she is very much out of my league, and I am unsure what to do. I was expecting to just get told that she had a boyfriend, so I didn’t really think of anything after asking her out. She gave me her number and seemed excited when I reached out. I need to know what to do, and how to not fuck it up so I am now coming to Reddit.
Thank you.
The people who answer questions here are awesome

What's something that after all this time, you're surprised people still do?
For me it's smoking cigarettes. With the absolutely obvious health risks involved with smoking cigarettes, and the ridiculous cost of a pack of cigarettes these days, it blows my mind that there are still so many smokers.
What is something that people still do today that surprises you to see?

What exactly does it mean for a city to be “walkable”? And why do so many people say the US doesn’t have any?

I need help people!! How to get Indian spice smell out of my “new” house?
Hello! First off, I want to preface by saying that this post is not intended to be offensive whatsoever!! **** We just bought our dream house, the only problem is that the Indian family that lived in it previously used heavy spices to cook with regularly so the house smells like that classic Indian food smell. I love Indian food…!!! but I don’t want my new house to smell like it lol Does anyone know how to permanently get completely rid of this smell?? Don’t tell me to light a candle ok There’s no carpet or curtains/fabric holding smell- it’s hardwood floors. This family lived in the house for about 30 years. Anywho, I think I have enough info. Any and all advice is appreciated!

South korea's fertility rate is estimated to be 0.68 in 2024 and still falling quickly, and some cities and parts of seoul and busan have rates of 0.30 children per woman (and still declining). How severe is this?

Are home prices going to stabilize or go down anytime soon?
We've been waiting to buy a home for 3 years (and saving up for 10), but prices keep skyrocketing and sometimes the house we want to look at is sold before we have chance to book an appointment.
My real estate agent says we should just "be aggressive" at "snapping up a home" and that "home prices are going to keep climbing for a long time". She says "it's a new market and isn't going to change anytime soon".
It took us 10 years to save up for this, but don't see how we can manage if prices keep going up. We don't want to rush into a big decision, but there is a lot of time pressure since homes are selling so fast.
What would have to happen for home prices to drop and how to track that? What should I be watching to be informed of where prices are going? How do I learn more about the overall "health" of the market? Everything my real estate agent says is anecdotally and while it's spot on for my area, I'd like to see a bigger picture of things.

Before ice (or refrigerators) and jarring, if livestock suddenly died, what did ranchers do?
I imagine when a slaughter was planned, they could bring in neighbors. However, if it's unexpected, then there is a big project + few hundred pounds of meat. Even with a big family of 10+ it's going to last a long time.
Did they just have tons of beef jerky?

Dealership threatened chargeback for not providing proof of employment
I bought a brand new truck in May 2023. The dealership contacted me by text a couple of weeks ago telling me they are under an audit and failed to get proof of employment so could I please send a paystub from May of 2023. I ignored the request because 1) the truck is now paid off so I feel it’s irrelevant for proof of employment and 2) I’m not comfortable sharing this information with them one year after the fact.
This morning I received another text from the dealer telling me he really needed that paperwork or else there would have to be a chargeback. What? A chargeback for what? Can they do that?
Note: I forgot my checkbook the day I bought the truck so they let me use my credit card for the down payment. It is possible they have my credit card info.

Why don’t airlines just tell you why things are delayed?
Flew back from vacation last night, had a connection in Charlotte. We sat on the runway for almost an hour, waiting to deplane. No one would tell us anything, or give any updates. People were getting anxious about making their connections, as this was an international flight, and we all had to go through customs, baggage claim, back through TSA and run to our next flight.
The staff on my next flight told us there were storms earlier that delayed leaving flights, so we were waiting for an open gate. Why not tell us that as it’s happening for crying out loud?!
Not my only experience, but not trying to write a novel.

What is a great sign to make for a friend’s arrival at an airport?
My best friend is coming to visit me and I want to make one of those big signs. I don’t know whether to go the humorous route (and if I do, what do I say?) or a more loving route like “Looking for the most beautiful best friend, Claire”
Open to any suggestions !
