r/anime's Least Favorite Anime Voting Here

Well, the results are inevitably similar to the Fantasy poll, but it's neat seeing how things shuffle around a bit. Some of that is likely random noise, and some of it will be how people are drawn to specific shows in different contexts. But mostly it's neat to see A Place Further than the Universe among a bunch of shows about magic.

Full Top 100 Here

Anybody who is a fan of anime like Frieren, Mushishi, girl's last tour now is probably a good time to check out Kino's journey (2003).

50

u/1_130426 Feb 07 '24

will do, thanks for recommendation

u/kuburas Feb 07 '24

And specifically the one from 2003, theres a newer one but it doesnt have the same feel. The older animation style with voice acting really gives it a unique feel which cant be replicated nowdays.

8

u/Leonardo1123581321 Feb 08 '24

I recall a YouTube video talking about how the 2003 art style works better because it helps sell the surreal nature of the world that Kino is traveling and helps bring the places and people to life as real places. However, the remake’s art style looks like it fell out of generic anime number 1000+ and that while it’s very pretty and nice to look at, the art’s more standard style makes the world feel more generic. So it’s harder to accept the surreal nature of the world and everything feels flatter as a result.

2

u/F00dbAby Feb 08 '24

But which has a better story?

8

u/AwaySpell https://anilist.co/user/awayspell Feb 08 '24

Still 2003. Kino's Journey is a series of largely self-contained stories, and the 2003 and 2017 anime adapt a different subset of them (some stories are in both, though). 2017 prioritized stories that introduced new side characters, so it has a more haphazard feel overall. Kino's adventures would be periodically interrupted by an episode introducing a new character who rarely, if ever, show up again. 2017 is worth checking out if you want more Kino's Journey, but 2003 is the more consistent and stronger product.

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Feb 07 '24

It even has the word Kino in its title

14

u/y-c-c Feb 07 '24

For some reason I like Frieren and Mushishi but never could really get into Kino’s Journey (2003). It felt kind of on-the-nose and preachy and I didn’t quite get into it as much as I thought I would.

16

u/Retromorpher Feb 08 '24

I would hesitate to put Frieren alongside Kino. Kino's more episodic nature that puts character growth to the wayside to focus on philosophical conundrums is the antithesis of Frieren's slow-burn character drama.

8

u/y-c-c Feb 08 '24

Yeah this is a good point. They are both "traveling" shows, but the focus are quite different.

2

u/Kumomeme Feb 08 '24

rather than Frieren, closer comparison with Kino is Wandering Witch of Elaina which is also pretty good.

2

u/retrobob69 Feb 08 '24

Already watched it years ago. :-p

2

u/Pichuunnn Feb 08 '24

And Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryouko/Girls Last Tour (2017) too.

That one is a better spiritual successor to Kino Journey 2003 than the Kino anime 2017.

2

u/ginko_sama Feb 09 '24

Finally, Mushishi gets the recognition it deserves.

2

u/Western_Lumpy Feb 11 '24

What if I watched and loved all of them 🥲. Gimme more

Wait Naruto is an adventure anime?!

74

u/notenoughformynickna Feb 07 '24

So weird lol. Naruto and Gurren Lagann seem a bit out of place here.

14

u/whynonamesopen https://myanimelist.net/profile/Dav333333 Feb 07 '24

I guess moving from point a to b counts as an adventure.

21

u/Naive_Duck4028 Feb 07 '24

Deadass was shocked to see it in the list too lmao

23

u/ZookeepergameOk2150 Feb 07 '24

So many in there which are just action anime but still there in the list

10

u/Jacktwelve17 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jacktwelve17 Feb 07 '24

It was at the start of og Naurto and at the start shippuden

6

u/CaralhinhosVoadorez Feb 08 '24

Tbh those were my favorite parts, I would have loved if the anime/manga had focused more on the adventure aspect and world building

3

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '24

Some of these are just popular and got votes.

Girls last tour : 13

LET'S GO!

123

u/ShadowTown0407 Feb 07 '24

Man, Girls last tour really deserves a movie to wrap up the remaining chapters, it's definitely an ending worth watching

44

u/gangrainette https://myanimelist.net/profile/bouletos Feb 07 '24

Yeah the last 2 volumes have great moment.

[GLT]I'm ready to cry again for the kentengrad with music this time, and to "I am the second happiest person in the world", and the last drawning of humanity in a museum next to the first one.

3

u/Plerti Feb 08 '24

I'm not sure if I'm ready to see again [GirlsLastTour] The climb of those stairs in pitch darkness after they lost everything and how they held hands to not lose each other as well, both physically and mentally. It's such a powerful scene

9

u/MrRandomGUYS Feb 07 '24

Actual dream. I would kill for it to get the final two volumes adapted. The series is a perfect adaptation other than the fact it’s incomplete.

5

u/YuurisLastTour Feb 07 '24

I don’t think I could handle that last volume adapted

→ More replies (3)

18

u/Admmmmi Feb 07 '24

now we just need the shimeji adaptation.

7

u/karlpoppins Feb 07 '24

By far my favorite anime, its only flaw is that it doesn't adapt the final chapters of the manga. The end is incredibly beautiful.

3

u/Admiral_Akdov Feb 07 '24

It is always nice to see GLT get some love.

Made in Abyss at the top

Ah yes, we love pain and suffering the anime

139

u/grimjowjagurjack Feb 07 '24

While made in abyss is a show that does have a lot of pain and suffering for characters , its also have a lot of sweet , chill and funny moments and its always tell you that no matter how dark its get there's always hope , that balance is what make it a masterpiece

35

u/L_0ken Feb 08 '24

Yeah, it even says so in the show, Abyss provides both Curses and Blessings, overall tone is full of optimism and enthusiasm, despite every horrible thing happening it's not some depression factory, vibes are very bittersweet.

15

u/FelixAndCo Feb 08 '24

I don't know. I always feel like the sweet moments are there to make the suffering greater. The way they talk about desires and they're descending what is basically Hell, I feel like it's setting up for a very unhappy end.

7

u/Spectrip Feb 08 '24

Conversely the whole message of season 2 was "finding light in the darkness". How the abyss can turn "even junk into gold". Its got a very hopeful optimistic ending about moving on and finding your own meaning for life.

The optimism in the face of horror is definitely a main theme of the show and not just dressing to make the horror stand out more in my opinion.

Mad in Abyss had a variety of well flushed out environments. It’s like Nausicaa but with new biomes one after another.

I think the one who commented it is a manga reader (they used the word chapters) and yes the manga has some questionable stuff. The anime takes off some of them. Mia anime fans are quite happy with them censoring things.

I'm never touching the manga.

10

made in abyss #1 is surprising

361

u/FetchFrosh x6https://anilist.co/user/Fetch Feb 07 '24

I feel like Made in Abyss being popular with r/anime is the least surprising result possible.

205

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Feb 07 '24

It's quite popular but not annoyingly popular which is the perfect sweet spot for this sub.

141

u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi Feb 07 '24

People love it, but it can be very difficult to recommend. So fans don’t shove it in other people’s faces nearly as much as other well loved series. I personally enjoy the series quite a bit, but there are still questionable elements and there is also all of the horrors.

37

u/Sharebear42019 Feb 07 '24

If only mushoku fans did the same curtesy

61

u/SoullessHollowHusk Feb 07 '24

You don't constantly hear people accusing MiA fans of being sadists/child abusers

You do hear a lot of (dumb) people accusing MT fans of being pedos, though

5

u/alexnedea Feb 08 '24

MT is a good story, lore and plot plagued by unnecessary pedo vibes and horny angles. Like why? Why does this dude need to be andult in another world. Why cant he just be a random kid born in that world, with no outer soul or whatever.

A scene between 2 14 yo fucking where one is actually 40? Weird and gross. A scene between 2 14 year olds fucking and thats it? Still weird that it gets shown and not just only implied but at least no pedo vibes.

That anime is just so hard to watch for me. Its like the author knew he had a good plot and interesting world and story and decided to fuck with us by adding incredibly horny shit for no good reason.

4

u/SoullessHollowHusk Feb 08 '24

Now, I understand the show is not for everyone, and if you didn't like it, that's perfectly valid

What you seem to miss is that the author didn't want to simply write a fantasy story, but rather a story in which a man that failed in life gets a second shot at it

7

u/GregerMoek https://myanimelist.net/profile/GregerMoek Feb 08 '24

And to get that second shot he needs to be reborn as handsome(by Rudeus own admission), overpowered, with an advantage of an adult thinking brain at low age to make the world give him what he wants. Oh and let's not forget a well connected family.

The "win" he gets in the end(different from redemption) ofc can't just be one partner. Nah it has to be three waifus. Cause otherwise it's not win enough. I get polyamory is a thing. But in this case it just reeks of wish fulfillment for me. And basically sends the message that you need all those perks to be successful. And once you succeed, you get all the wives. Because the author prolly couldn't pick who he thought more fitting and he didn't wanna upset fans so ofc all three.

The story would've been more interesting if he, despite being dealt a bad hand in the new life, would've risen above it as a better person. Instead he's prolly dealt the best hand possible and we're supposed to be amazed that this person became "better" than his old self.

Is there a mistake with the chart? How did Made in Abyss get more points overall when HxH had a lot more first and second picks than Made in Abyss? Or am I misunderstanding how the point system works?

Edit: Nvm I see how it works now. The votes for 4th to 10th place gave Made in Abyss the boost to number one. Personally, I find the point system to be a bit weird but whatever.

32

u/AlScouserNL Feb 07 '24

I'm with you there. Clearly having more votes for 1st and 2nd place should be the deciding factor if you're asking me.

so shouldn't be all too surprising

Konosuba making the list is way more surprising. They barely leave town.

21

u/NarejED Feb 07 '24

It fits the genre more rigidly than most of the other entries on here, which definitely helps

u/ExpiredMilknCheese Feb 07 '24 edited Feb 07 '24

I did not know this sub loves made in abyss.

27

u/ExpiredMilknCheese Feb 07 '24

As much as it’s underrated elsewhere, Made in abyss was real popular on this sub back when it was airing its Season 2

8

u/Western-Standard2333 Feb 07 '24

Also, and more importantly, because it took like 5 years between seasons so the hype was pent up 😂 we won’t be seeing the next season until at least like 2028 it feels like

The fantasy aspects of Made in abyss are excellent. The other parts (music aside) might not be everybody's cup of tea but the world building is so interesting.

It is a world you want to dive in (horrific stuff aside).

12

u/bot_nah Feb 07 '24

I've seen like 1/3 of the shows there but I feel it's just right at #1. Minus the weirdness and too much suffering, I thought it fits the adventure genre very nicely.

One piece could have been a perfect adventure for me, but it's way too stretched out.

2

u/silaswanders https://kitsu.io/users/silaswanders Feb 07 '24

I am quite surprised because for a time, no one seemed to know much about it since it was stuck in Amazon Prime Video hell. So many other amazing ones under the same fate like Re:Creators. They did that one dirty. It was basically Reverse Isekai meets Fate: Unlimited Budget.

2

u/MovieDogg Feb 07 '24

It's my number two... for the next poll.

2

u/AniGodKing Feb 07 '24

I did not expect that at all. Not saying its undeserved. I just thought its more of a niche anime.

2

u/LakerBlue https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue Feb 08 '24

Not saying it isn’t good or popular here but I think it strongly benefited from being a clear cut adventure show. I would argue there are some shows ranked beneath it here that would or could leap over it if we were ranking them on overall quality.

4

u/igla12 Feb 07 '24

A good suprise. Probably the best adventure ever created.

Glad to see Golden Kamuy made the list, one of my favorites along with HxH

7

u/LOLinternetLOL Feb 08 '24

Golden Kamuy is one of the greatest manga/anime of all time. Apparently the large cooking aspects of the show were partially influenced by the authors love of the Dungeon Meshi manga which has been around for about the same amount of time.

5

u/YouMeADD Feb 08 '24

I wish GK was more appreciated, relatively few people seem interested but it is super super good all the way through.

HxH enjoyers stay winning tho

3

u/Confuzn Feb 08 '24

I love Golden Kamuy so much it’s a shame it’s not more popular.

26

u/Teid Feb 07 '24

You fuckers are so in for it when Dungeon Meshi gets deeper in.

6

u/_who_the_fuck_am_I https://myanimelist.net/profile/Pranav_Senku Feb 07 '24

The world building already seems amazing, can't wait for more

11

u/Teid Feb 07 '24

It really is top class. There's a reason people frequently binge the manga in a matter of days and act like they're consumed by a mind parasite on the other end. I've seen at least two people go and read the manga out of curiosity after watching the anime episodes and come out the other end a changed person. Not to hype it up or anything but this might be the tightest and best written fantasy story in the last decade both thematically and just in pure enjoyment. Not just best fantasy manga, best fantasy story full stop.

Why yes I have been affected by the mind parasite why do you ask?

I was so damn sure that Frieren would get the top position ( recency bias) and I am glad it didn't( I meant it in a positive way).

Hunter x Hunter despite coming second got the most gold medals. GOAT.

Made in Abyss coming first is no brainer considering how much this sub adores it.

Vinland saga making it to the top 10 despite having less top 3 medals ( The power of having no enemies should never be underestimated😅).

32

u/Brewdrizy Feb 07 '24

HxH got the most gold and the most silver, how wasn’t it rated #1?

(I have never seen either, just wondering based on how these are ranked.)

23

u/jh0_ Feb 07 '24

The rules for the poll is at the top of the image. Basically, users give a top ten ranking. 1st place receives 3 points, 2nd and 3rd place recieves 2 points, and any other place recieves 1 point. Therefore, Made in Abyss made enough people's top 10 such that it had more points despite having less 1st and 2nd places compared to HxH.

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Feb 07 '24

One piece entire premise is Pure adventuring, so I’m pretty happy it’s that high up too

9

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Feb 07 '24

I'd say 4 out of the top 5 (Mushoku Tensei being the outlier) have a pretty pure adventuring premise, and Mushoku Tensei has enough adventuring in it for it to be a worthy pick as well.

10

u/Admmmmi Feb 07 '24

most people dont watch it? i mean sure it aint that talked about here but i kinda doubt that most people here dont watch it or at least watched it a bit.

15

u/Sharebear42019 Feb 07 '24

Yeah the Op sub has a third of anime member count and it’s episodes always get high traction on crunchy

29

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Feb 07 '24

Most people who are involved enough in r/anime to vote in these polls don't watch it. Given that there are almost 1100 episodes out, someone who watches it would have to give up watching around 90 cours worth of other anime to catch up which most people wouldn't do.

Also, the average One Piece anime episode only gets around 200 Karma on this subreddit so there's that as well.

GIRLS LAST TOUR MENTIONED YAYYYY

19

u/tragicjohnson84 Feb 07 '24

What a great category, pretty everything here is top notch. Probably the category where One Piece can shine the most

Mushishi so high? My people you know what’s good!!!!!

25

u/avoteforatishon2016 Feb 07 '24

JOJO MADE IT IN THE TOP 10 WOOOOOO LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOO

Also, didn't know this sub liked MiA so much, damn.

6

u/Marcus-dude Feb 07 '24

JOJO ABOVE DB AND NARUTO LES GOOOOOOO

6

u/Marcus-dude Feb 07 '24

Also it should be no1. Literaly the only one to have adventure in the name

47

u/John7763 Feb 07 '24

With the amount of rage, finger pointing, and name calling this sub gets to when it's mentioned, I'm very surprised Mushoku Tensei is actually on the list and as high as it was. Happy nonetheless, it's an incredible journey and very unique in its storytelling.

39

u/SoullessHollowHusk Feb 07 '24

Because except for the small minority of loud and rabid detractors, most people here understand how fucking good of a show it is

How does Hunter x Hunter have 10 more gold, 15 more silver, and only 5 less copper than made in abyss, and come in second?

8

u/stickdudeseven Feb 07 '24

Love the pic they chose for Girls Last Tour

9

u/Sharebear42019 Feb 07 '24

Sad magi didn’t make the cut. Maybe if it got a full adaptation

Edit - it did get 46 though

6

u/Interesting-Try4373 Feb 07 '24

Magi falls to the turn of time.

If it had come out recently, it would probably be recognised as one of the Greats in Shonen too.

But Geo-politics wasn’t really a good selling point when it’s Manga was releasing unfortunately.

Surprisingly given its Fantasy aspect, it had a huge deal of Philosophy in it.

6

u/Sharebear42019 Feb 07 '24

I really loved it even with the divisive ending. The kou arc would’ve been amazing for season 3

10

u/PolvoAranha Feb 07 '24

Oh yeah, KonoSuba is on the top. I wasn't expecting, but it was welcomed.

5

u/Abschori Feb 07 '24

And that's without anything new from the main series for 5 years

3

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '24

They hardly leave town tho

19

u/scythoro Feb 07 '24

How are the total points calculated? If it’s based on the medals, how did Made in Abyss outrank Hunter x Hunter?

44

u/FetchFrosh x6https://anilist.co/user/Fetch Feb 07 '24

We're still trying to invent a way to explain it.

8

u/bot_nah Feb 07 '24

It's explained in the top. #1 -3 points, #2 and 3 -2 points. #4 and lower 1 point

7

u/scythoro Feb 07 '24

Ok, so a ton of folks must have ranked MiA between 4th and 10th. Because it looks like Hunter x Hunter scored way higher than it when just looking at the top three ranks.

Would be interesting to see how the rankings compared if #1 received 10 pts and it scaled linearly down to #10 receiving 1 pt.

(Disclaimer: Not trying to prop up HxH, it’s just the first discrepancy I noticed.)

That would make a lot of sense actually

Subarashi

3

u/Odaric Feb 07 '24

I can agree with most of these, but Magi not being on here is a crime.

Then again, it's a super underrated show.

3

u/Strict_Main_6419 Feb 07 '24

Holy shit that’s actually a fire list 🔥

3

u/PM_ME_SILLY_KITTIES Feb 08 '24

made in abyss stay winning

3

u/Bryce3D https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bryce3D Feb 08 '24

I love that Girl's Last Tour made this list

3

u/Sn3aXNUB Feb 08 '24

So glad golden kamuy is on the list

10

u/el_tiburon_sexy Feb 07 '24

I think A Place Further Than The Universe should be higher, but top 7 isn't bad at all considering it isn't that popular. Also, I'm glad to see Girls' Last Tour getting some recognition, it is too damn good.

16

u/asmita_sama Feb 07 '24

Tengoku Daimakyou! 🔥

TTGL so low? 🤔

21

u/gangrainette https://myanimelist.net/profile/bouletos Feb 07 '24

TTGL so low? 🤔

The first half is barely an adventure anime and the second isn't.

9

u/Sharebear42019 Feb 07 '24

Tbh Vinland doesn’t really feel like an adventure unless your idea of adventure is [anime] being forced to fight in Viking wars til you get your revenge then be forced into slavery

5

u/gangrainette https://myanimelist.net/profile/bouletos Feb 07 '24

I didn't vote for Vinland here either.

2

u/haitike https://myanimelist.net/profile/haitike Feb 07 '24

TTGL is an awesome anime but most people don't conider it an adventure anime.

If the ranking was about mecha or action it would be higher. oh, if the ranking was abut hype it would be #1

3

u/CandidateOld1900 Feb 07 '24

Why is Vinland saga adventure anime if it's about group of Danish mercenaries invading England?

3

u/Whimsycottt Feb 07 '24

I hope Dungeon Meshi will be on this list once it finishes.

I loved the manga and felt like it had incredible world (errr, dungeon) building in recent memories.

6

u/No-Gas-7537 Feb 07 '24

Seeing made in abyss in 1 makes me not lose hope on all of you weebs

6

u/Mammonoth Feb 07 '24

Mushishi is ranked 17 !!! Fantasticc

6

u/RevolutionUpset6016 Feb 07 '24

4

I don't care what anyone says , made in abyss is a masterpiece and my favourite anime of all times . Its have my favourite world building , ost , animation , scenearies writing all phenomenal Its also have my favourite MC ( riko ) favourite antagonist ( bondrewd ) and favourite side character ( faputa ) in all of anime

10

u/PessimisticProphet Feb 07 '24

Made in abyss over HxH. This is why direct democracy doesnt work lol

3

u/MovieDogg Feb 07 '24

Totally. Hunter x Hunter, even if the manga is better, is a masterpiece anime.

3

u/gitgudnubby Feb 07 '24 edited Feb 08 '24

As an anime id say hxh but if I felt like watching one over the other purely for the adventure aspect mia takes the cake tbh.

2

u/PessimisticProphet Feb 08 '24

Based on the traditional definition of "adventure", mia is 20% adventure 20% horror 60% depression lol

You need to understand that things are not only based in your opinion. The fact you prefer an anime doesn't mean it's better than anything else.

Girls last tour surprised me!

2

u/bot_nah Feb 07 '24

Huh I thought samurai champloo and cowboy bebop would appear. The episodic style gave me adventure vibes

2

u/Violentcloud13 Feb 07 '24

A surprisingly solid list for this sub. Kino's Journey impressively high, though I liked the newer one better (both belong in a top ten imo).

2

u/Particular_Permit_50 Feb 07 '24

My soul has just been damaged😫

2

u/ksiAle Feb 07 '24

Can someone help? Which of these ones are finished (anime)?

2

u/That_Pandaboi69 Feb 07 '24

Whoa this is a nice list.

2

2

u/rick_rolled_you Feb 08 '24

Golden Kamuy is goated

2

u/Dead-HC-Taco Feb 08 '24

Golden Kamuy actually made it on a top tier list? Lets goooo

2

u/MordredLovah Feb 08 '24

For world and creature design, Made in Abyss goes hard. You'll never see another anime as unique as it is.

Same with Nausicaa and Girl's Last Tour, sometimes I forget about the story and I just wanna see the rest of the world and its inhabitants.

2

u/Saekoa https://myanimelist.net/profile/saekoa Feb 08 '24

Made in abyss #1 is so based

2

u/PeachesPair Feb 08 '24

YA NAUSICAA!!!!

2

u/Cute_thingy Feb 08 '24

Love to see Spice & Wolf on the list. My favorite anime so far!

What the fuck? This many people know about Kino's Journey? That's shocking, but the show is really really good so enjoy I guess

4

Made in Abyss? Why am i not surprised?

5

u/MissYunna Feb 07 '24

Made in Abyss!!! Definitely deserves this amazing position!!!!

3

u/Lucii_fer Feb 07 '24

Is Mushishi better than Natsume? I haven't watched Mushishi yet, but heard it's similar to natsume (i really liked Natsume Yuujinchou anime).

Mid tier list

5

u/SaitamaVsAnya Feb 07 '24

I'm happy that hxh gets some love

5

u/AgentOfACROSS Feb 07 '24

Okay with how high this Frieren show keeps being ranked I'm gonna have to watch it at some point.

Definitely seems to be a good diversity when it comes to types of anime here in terms of genre and what year they came out.

19

u/Lovealltigers Feb 07 '24

Highly recommend Frieren, I definitely don’t want to overhype it but I think it has something for everyone, and it’s production is absolutely amazing
