Yeah I was kind of confused too because I hear a lot of people say this is one of the best WiiU games.

People talk about the music a lot too.

Avid gamer from 1993 to 2017. During the WiiU years, I was onto PS3 and had no idea that this game even existed. I'm sure there's others like me.

Underrated is not the word I would use but I understand OP's intent.

Yeah I had a Wii and skipped the Wii-U, but I have always loved the Donkey King Country franchise and played almost all of them since the Super Nintendo.

I had the Wii as well. Okami, Zelda, and Mario Kart with the wheel holster. Just never bothered with the U.

PS3 was well established at that point, Rock Band and Guitar Hero were all the rage, then moved on to actual games once developers caught up and more awesome games came out. There wasn't a reason, for me, to look elsewhere for console gaming.

Again, I don't think underrated is the correct term. I do agree with "not well known" or something along those lines.

We even had a WiiU and this is the first time I've seen this game.

At 83 average from critic reviews on metacritic, it's actually kind of underrated IMO

Amazing platformer, maybe not underrated but underplayed.

It’s really loud in here!

I had put off getting it for years because it never drops in price anywhere but I finally pulled the trigger on it at Best Buy about a month ago and I will say it’s definitely a 50$ value. Best DK game since the SNES for sure

I respect your comment and I'm happy that you got the game, it's great!

However, the post was in reference to the greatest (stupid) YouTube video there is: https://youtu.be/bWu5X4jcvv8?si=EPqwQl8Exc86f1Fg

President joe Biden makes it illegal to not play donkey Kong tropical freeze *gets second term *

No new DK game on the Switch for its entire lifespan is insane. Nintendo is dropping the ball.

2

u/Positive-Education51 13d ago

My dream dream dream is a botw style open world platformy/barrelly/jungle paradise dk game

u/shinikahn 13d ago

What has retro been doing for the last 10 years honestly? Like I know they're developing Metroid 4, but it's wild their last game came out over a decade ago.

6

u/CuddleCores 14d ago

Is this game hard, by curiosity?

8

u/glob_on_a_knob 14d ago

A little. The levels are way longer than i expected tbh.

2

u/Subject_Arachnid5292 13d ago

Not really. The bonus levels are a solid challenge. Once you beat it there is still time trials, survival mode (1heart?) and stuff to collect. Not to mention secret levels and all that jazz. It's really a fantastic game if you like the series.

1

u/Extra-Use-7754 13d ago

Not too hard to beat, but there are some very difficult (in a good way) bonus levels. Very fun challenge to complete all of them.

1

u/Pengin83 13d ago

I got stuck on the second level while I was getting chemo treatments and quit. Maybe my slow reaction speeds had something to do with that though lol

6

u/supersaiyandoyle 13d ago

I don't think anyone who's played it thinks it's underrated.

3

u/AlternativesEnde 13d ago

One of the best Soundtracks in Video Game history.

3

u/peterosity 13d ago

don’t think you understand what “underrated” means

5

u/Subject_Arachnid5292 13d ago

I don't believe you know what underrated means. The game did very well. Donkey Kong games are never underrated. They're always bangers and we know damn well that they're going to be.

2

u/alezcoed 14d ago

Where's the new funky mode?

3

u/Navetoor 13d ago

Switch release

2

u/hughk14 13d ago

Almost as good as country returns, switch needs new dk...

2

u/OkCategory0 13d ago

the Donkey Kong Country series is underrated in general.

2

u/RoachOnDonut 13d ago

I waited in line at GameStop on release day to purchase this game. Do you know how many people were in line?

Just me. Line of one 😂

Great game!

2

u/-Ginchy- 13d ago

Do they have little animal buddies that you find in crates like in the SNES game with the Ostrich, Swordfish, Rhino?

1

u/Ralf_9k 13d ago

Rhino

1

u/-Ginchy- 13d ago

Aww that’s sad. But at there’s the Rhino.

2

u/RhexxaHexagon 13d ago

Still the best dk country game imo

1

u/mind_mine 14d ago

It's on the list of games to get to eventually

1

u/WatonWachuchero 14d ago

Mad World Wii say hi!

1

u/Beeg_Bagz 13d ago

It’s so good!

1

u/jfoss1 13d ago

I mean, it was thought highly enough of to get a switch port. I'm still, however hopelessly, waiting for a Windwaker HD port

2

u/BirdjaminFranklin 13d ago

Windwaker HD

So many people skipped the WiiU. The fact they didn't at least do a digital port of WWHD is infuriating.

1

u/jfoss1 13d ago

Missed the perfect chance to release or at least announce it during zeldas anniversary stuff

1

u/ace23GB 13d ago

When a game is underrated at first, sometimes time does the work, maybe in 10-15 years it will be appreciated.

1

u/Funcestor 13d ago

Not treally underrated, the reviews are great. I think you meant "overlooked"

1

u/osawatomie_brown 13d ago

"overlooked"

1

u/nealmb 13d ago

I don’t think it was the game as much as the platform it released on. The Wii U wasn’t the best, and most people avoided it. It was ported to the switch, but yea Nintendo not doing price drops is also not doing it any favors.

1

u/Accomplished-Door272 13d ago

Underrated =/= good

1

u/SiyoSan 13d ago

Dropped. Normal mode was too hard and funky mode too easy.

1

u/ZEAC2001 13d ago

The game is very fairly rated, everyone that played it as far as I know loved it, just under recognised due to being on a dead platform. There's a big difference. But I understand what you're saying. Although it gets the love it deserved it will never get the success it deserves.

1

u/AlternativeResort477 13d ago

Donkey Kong frozen ape

1

u/Ralf_9k 13d ago

I love this game!! Specially the switch version

1

u/ThousandTroops 13d ago

Wife loves this game so much - she used to tell me she “would only play donkey Kong” and I got her this one for Christmas. She played for about 20 hours total, but they were fun hours. It was good to see her game, especially since I do it so much…

She doesn’t anymore, on account of our kids hijacking the Switch, but maybe I’ll try to get her back on it.

1

u/NavelGames 12d ago

it has such diverse level design and just keeps you on your toes about what will come next

1

u/Current-Key-3233 12d ago

And I'd say one of the hardest to beat that I own!

1

u/Alarming_Band_5928 12d ago

I remember playing that game it was way more fun then I thought it would be

Now sell me on why I should play Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, but only using lines donkey Kong has said

3

u/nicky9pins 14d ago

4

u/OtterPops89 13d ago

If this doesn't sell you on the game you might be the boring one.

2

u/NoMistake4100 11d ago

I’m sold

1

u/Ididotmacaroon 14d ago

“We’ve gotta save Kongo Bongo Islaaaand!”

0

u/notofuspeed 13d ago

Never head of it, looks cool! I remember the old SNES game only haha

Make way everybody, this guy plays PC, so now he apparently has to tell everyone about it.

Yes, I legitimately like all of those things. Do you think that's bad? What are you, 14? Lmao

Also, you may not be aware, but it's entirely possible to enjoy PC games without letting the whole world know that you play PC. Just FYI since you seem to be struggling with the concept
