I really love Jiro and Mutsumi's relationship!

Rain's crush on Ryo is too cute. I'm rooting for her!

Hoping Yuri will eventually open up to Buchio

That black shadowy stuff is terrifying...

That black shadowy stuff is terrifying...

Just remember -- it is sad and lonely, in addition to being scary. ;-)

u/derekschroer Apr 13 '24

those headpats are healing.

u/LeonKevlar https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Apr 13 '24

I didn't exepct this cute little ship! I'd love to see more of Rain and Ryo's interactions.

That scene with Mutsumi getting lured by that white snake was very creepy. Looks like not all yokai are friendly.

And we got some drama with Buchio and Yuri. Now I'm wondering what Yuri's family was like.

That final scene with Betobeto and Mutsumi was interesting though. Maybe the shadowy figure isn't bad, just a lonely yokai who wants to leave the shadows like Betobeto.

u/bloquer Apr 13 '24

So what or who is sealed on the mountain, and why does the snake want to break them free? Something straight up evil, or perhaps simply something which doesn't take other lives into account and would bring misery to everyone if let free? Or something misunderstood?

I also wonder if Betobeto did vanish a human back when he was inside the shadow, or if there are indeed shadows which are just creepy but not inherently dangerous. And if so, what the difference is between those and between the ones which spirit humans away, because that seems to be a real danger in this world.

Hanako being a love counsellor for school kids instead of a horror monster was a funny way to integrate her, it just may turn out that she gets most of her love advices from manga or something. At least judging by the quality of her advice so far.

I gotta say that this is a really nice little gem of a show, I like how most people have a good degree of emotional intelligence and are supportive and positive, and that we still have room for some darker feelings and moments nontheless.

u/Atharaphelun Apr 14 '24

So what or who is sealed on the mountain, and why does the snake want to break them free?

Given that the tree is wrapped in a shimenawa (the rope thing on the tree), it appears that the tree is supposed to be the yorishiro (an object that can be dwelled in by spirits or gods) for a god, thus making it a shintai (a yorishiro of a god specifically). I do recall them mentioning in episode 1 that most of the gods have left, with only a few or just one left behind.

10

u/bloquer Apr 14 '24

Thanks for the explanation! A snake wanting to free a god (?), or perhaps removing the connection between yokai and humans if that exists because of the god / the yorishiro. I expect the snake to not be fully evil, so far all characters had some depth and complexity to them after all.

3

u/NekoCatSidhe Apr 14 '24 edited Apr 14 '24

I thought the white snake was the evil thing that was sealed by the rope around that tree. Maybe it would have been free to eat Mutsumi if the rope got broken. The white snake is also obviously a reference to the evil snake woman that get sealed in the Tales of the Moon and Rain.

5

u/bloquer Apr 14 '24

Tales of the Moon and Rain Not knowing that, could be. But still I am not sure if the snake is supposed to be evil here, as we already had two examples doing it differently: There is Hanako, who is usually a horror monster, depicted as a cute middle school girl giving love advice, and we have Betobeto explaining to us that not all the dark clouds are evil, that they are sometimes simply lonely and want to connect.

We also had the snake listening in to Mutsumi's mom when she was telling Jirou how her husband is still away and she thinks he has been vanished. Makes me wonder if the snake wants to "fix" things so that this can't happen again.

there are more good new shows this season than i expected, but this is a real sleeper top 3 pick for me

11

u/mxmcknny Apr 14 '24

Saaaaaame I absolutely love this show. Makes me want to read the Ln.

So in one side we have a cute Kappa girl having advice from toilet bound Hanako kun of how to confess to her crush

And in the other side we have the kitsune woman traumatised about her past, the scary dark smoke Mutsumi sees is actually a yokai that hasn´t materialised yet and can swallow people (my theory is that some black smoke swallowed Mitsumi´s father) aaand a white snake that hypnotises people and makes them pulling of a what looks like a protective charm...

Yeah, the balance between wholesomeness and scaryness good yep

14

u/DarkAudit https://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkAudit Apr 14 '24

we have a cute Kappa girl having advice from toilet bound Hanako kun of how to confess to her crush

55 year old white dude, and I was a fist-pumping, leg-kicking bundle of squee at that.

11

u/cyberscythe Apr 14 '24

the balance between wholesomeness and scaryness good yep

yeah, i'm loving the interplay between the light and the dark sides; the danger part gives the camaraderie a purpose

it also plays into this pet theory i have about how Japan has a relatively high collectivist culture because of its geography and history — it's a nation that's constantly beset with disasters (earthquakes, tsunami, floods, fires, volcanoes, military invasion, ayakashi attacks, etc.) and so its people adapted by having social expectations of helping each other out in times of need and also expecting multiple layers of bureaucracy to handle all sorts of situations

5

u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants Apr 15 '24

I also think the black smoke swallowed up Mitsumi's father and that he's there in the smoke watching her and trying to reach out to her. I think the yokai actually know this BUT because the smoke are unmaterialized yokai, it won't return him to being exactly her father/the father she remembers.

I do think the snake knows this too and is trying to get Mitsumi to free her father. But because of my thoughts above, the village yokai are trying to "protect" her from this.

I really like how this show starts off super wholesome then eventually gets really dark each episode - itt's the best kind of whiplash.

3

u/Figerally https://myanimelist.net/profile/Pixelante Apr 14 '24

It is mysterious and wholesome, I guess that is what keeps me coming back for more.

15

u/derekschroer Apr 13 '24

these are my favorite types of shows. Wish there were more like them.

I'd also recommend Edomae Elf (Otaku Elf); it's mostly goofy fun and history lesson, but there's a few melancholic scenes in there mixed in.

Non Non Biyori is also great if you just want to have the small country village life from a kid's perspective.

3

u/Wiles_ Apr 14 '24

Fuujin Monogatari

So underappreciated. Rarely see it get mentioned.

10

u/mxmcknny Apr 14 '24

Slice of life with a very compelling narrative!

3

u/Andagaintothegym Apr 14 '24

Uchuuten Kazoku my friend both S1 and S2

And if you like it try also Natsume Yujinchou and Flying Witch.

3

u/Mrz_ryuu Apr 15 '24

I recommend Natsume Yuujinchou

2

u/Ashteron Apr 14 '24

It's very very slow but this show reminds me of Zettai Shounen a lot.

12

u/djthomp Apr 13 '24 edited Apr 14 '24

So comfy.

That series of athletic day events though, my god. The one with the floating mouths that were catching children, another with a volunteer Yuki-onna casually giving small children frostbite to the cheers of the crowd.

So many different types of Japanese spirits being included I couldn't begin to recognize them all.

7

u/raevnos Apr 14 '24

The one with the floating mouths that were catching children,

I got Mario Kart vibes from that. Wonder if Chain Chomps are inspired by the same yokai...

8

u/cyberscythe Apr 14 '24

Wonder if Chain Chomps are inspired by the same yokai...

if i recall correctly, chain chomps were inspired by a developer's childhood experience (Miyamoto?) with a neighborhood dog that was chained to a post

I gotta say few things about this

1 I love the world building this Anime has

2 Again some interesting scenes that makes me wanna know more

3 Goddamn this shit is wholesome

4 This needs more love, so far people is ignoring it

13

u/Ponchorello7 Apr 14 '24

This needs more love, so far people is ignoring it

Unfortunately, it's not a shonen, a harem, or overhyped like so many series that get undeserved attention, so I don't expect this to get big, unfortunately.

22

u/apatt Apr 14 '24

The most remarkable thing about this world is not that humans coexist with yokais, but that everybody is so nice and kind, except that white snake who didn't get the memo. He's probably thinking "Here I go again on my own".

5

u/Wastelandrider Apr 14 '24

I see what you did there

8

u/Swiggy1957 Apr 14 '24

NGL, the wholesomeness is at a whole other level. After watching episode 1, I had to go look up some things. Besides the supernatural/wholesome aspect, I can't help get over how the character design is so similar to Studio Ghibli. That was all I could think about while watching it, but it's not the case. Linden films has been around, I. One form or another, for over a century.

I'm not familiar with the story, having only just stumbled across it last week. If my granddaughters still came over to watch anime with grandpa, this is one I'd show them. Alas, they've hit the age they are now closing in on adulthood, or reached it. Boyfriends take precedence.

3

u/cyberscythe Apr 14 '24

some interesting scenes that makes me wanna know more

yeah, one thing that really got me interested in the first episode was the sequence of how they drip fed the ideas, especially with Mutsumi's father last episode — like, when her late grandfather told her that her father would be sad that she hoped to see him during Obon and i was like "what"

22

u/awesomeness89 https://myanimelist.net/profile/awesomeness89 Apr 13 '24

Most intriguing show of this season for me. You get wholesome scenes, but there seems to be so much underneath the surface and I'm really looking forward to learn more about this world.

Also it looks absolutely gorgeous.

8

u/mxmcknny Apr 14 '24

One pf my favorite new shows this season, easily.

17

u/angelposts Apr 13 '24

This remains my AOTS... this show is criminally underrated. I love it even more now than last episode. The worldbuilding, the characters, it's all so perfect. The person in the last thread who said it felt like watching a Ghibli movie was so right. Even with the simple art style, it just works and still looks beautiful. This is THE spring anime.

6

u/cyberscythe Apr 14 '24

i was almost going to pass this one over because i heard no buzz about it, but i'm glad i gave it a shot

the first episode was so good at setting the tone, and the second episode built on that

4

u/the_ghost_of_lenin Apr 13 '24

felt like watching a Ghibli movie

Given the title I'd say that's pretty explicit. My Neighbor Totoro's japanese title is Tonari no Totoro.

8

u/angelposts Apr 14 '24

I don't think that has much to do with it, "tonari no" just means "my neighbor" and there's tons of anime with it in the title. Tonari no Seki-kun, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san, etc.

6

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Apr 14 '24

I like seeing all these yokai living among the humans and seeing how the yokai interact with one another. Like Rain going to Hanako for advice was kind of cute. Buchio hanging out with Betobeto and Jiro was pretty sweet too. But I guess not all yokai are so peaceful and there are the shadows too, who are just lonely.

5

u/dagreenman18 Apr 14 '24

So far Betobeto is best boy because he’s such a chill dude. Even in that final scene he’s measured and calm explaining the deal with the shadows.

And the whole so is mostly that vibe. I already feel this will be the underrated relaxation show of the season. All the different subplots are wholesome. We got a new one this week with the cute Kappa girl Rain crushing on a boy. We got some progress in Buchio’s story with a hint of darkness in Yuri’s past. And bonus cute moment with her and I guess her partner considering their level of intamacy in the car. Then there was that creepy Mutsumi scene bookended with the Betobeto scene. Really enjoying this show.

"imaginary things are drawn to each other" is a rather intriguing line.

There is def a lot of mystery to this show. I cant say its what I expected when I saw the trailer before watching it, but I do like it.

6

u/cyberscythe Apr 14 '24

please don't tell me that i'm the only one who thought that Rain was wearing a yamaka before seeing she had kappa hands

2

u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants Apr 15 '24

Ha you're not alone, I thought the same

5

u/NekoCatSidhe Apr 14 '24

This show feels more and more like an hommage to My Neighbour Totoro.

It is interesting to see the yokai and humans cohabiting peacefully. Including shy kappa girls and other yokai kids attending school, and humans and yokai being friends and drinking together.

There is still a darkness under it all. Musumi’s father getting kamikakushi, that evil white snake that was straight out of an horror story, lonely shadows stalking people. There are a lot of friendly yokai, but the ones that are not seem very dangerous. I guess it is Jiro’s work as a tengu protecting the mountain to protect his human friends from evil yokai. It sounds like he is basically a yokai cop. I wonder if that is official or just a role he took on himself.

10

u/hiimneato Apr 13 '24

This is really good character writing for a concept that superficially seems like it's gonna be a gag. Youkai town! Kappa schoolgirl steams when overheating! Kids get advice from Hanako! Townie crow tengu patrols the mountains! And also... T H E V O I D I S L O N E L Y. Uh oh.

4

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin Apr 14 '24

Everyone has their own battle. For Rain it is with regard to her feelings. The first step is always the hardest. At least know it's clear she isn't doing it intentionally.

Sounds like Yuri has some massive family issue where she feels like Buchio wouldn't be able to understand. Them both showing concern for the other feelings was nice and hopefully builds the trust between them.

Mutsumi and Jiro has a very sweet relationship. But the shadows consuming people is making this story even more dark. Did they take her father? But in reality are they actually lonely? Lots of mysteries surrounding it. Tho that snake seems like nothing but trouble tho.

2

u/Genshin_WhiteKnight Apr 14 '24

Oh no, the shadows are youkai...

What do they do with the kidnapped people?

3

u/karer3is Apr 13 '24

English subtitles were missing, but fortunately the German ones still worked. I'm interested to hear more about what happens with Yuri and Buchio, but I also loved the bit with the kappa girl :)

1

u/Tora-ge Apr 17 '24

I want to live in this town 🥲

1

u/SomeonesTreasureGem Apr 18 '24

This captures the magic of Japan in a way really only Ghibli has for me and makes me feel a bit melancholic/wistful that I can’t live in such a place. It’s like the most charming little rural town crossed with Shinto/myths and legend all served up in a warm slice of life format.

Yuri or Holo? Yuri or Holo... this will be a tough decision.
