What a stupendous performance he gave, he did true justice to one of the most challenging character arcs in the story.
The casting for the movies was very incredible generally but he never felt "cast" to me, he just was Theoden.
Forth Eorlingas!

I agree. I reckon Theodenâs the hardest role, and he pulled it off majestically.

âOut of doubt, out of dark, to the dayâs rising he rode singing in the sun, sword unsheathing. Hope he rekindled, and in hope ended; over death, over dread, over doom lifted out of loss, out of life, unto long glory.â

God dammit. This whole thread is making me tear up, but this comment pushed me over the edge. Rest well Théoden, King of Rohan.

Out of doubt, out of dark, to the day's rising
he rode singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
Hope he rekindled, and in hope he ended;
over death, over dread, over doom lifted
out of loss, out of life, unto long glory.

It was difficult to imagine anyone being able to portray King Theoden & he fn nailed it. Going from a zombie king to saving Gondor is one of my favorite character transformations. RIP KING!!!

There is no other actor who could have played Theoden like he. A true great and a master of his craft. He lives on through film

âNever had any king of the Mark such company upon the road as went with ThĂ©oden, Thengelâs son to the land of his home.â
I am sad we didnât get this moment in the film. Arwen, Celeborn, Galadriel and their people, Glorfindel, Elrond and his sons and the princes of Dol Amroth and Ithilien with the knights of Gondor all ride in procession for a week to take ThĂ©oden to be buried. Unbelievable honor and respect from all free peoples.
âFrodo and Samwise rode at Aragornâs side, and Gandalf rode upon Shadowfax, and Pippin rode with the knights of Gondor; and Legolas and Gimli as ever rode together upon Arod.â
And Merry rides on the cart with Théoden, bearing all of his arms.

God damn this got me by surprice. Teared up a little.
Farewell, king Theoden!
I shall be listening to the Lament of the Rohirrim tonight. Anyone else feels up for it, here is a great rendition of it. https://youtu.be/2YTBgFmK_bs?si=qO8Nd-ERjmhRV0O5

The ride of the Rohirrim will remain my favourite part of both books and (thanks to Bernard Hill) the films. RIP.
âFey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Orome the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed.â

The Lament for the Rohirrim Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? Where is the helm and the hauberk, And the bright hair flowing? Where is the hand on the harpstring, And the red fire glowing? Where is the spring and the harvest And the tall corn growing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, Like a wind in the meadow; The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning, Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?
