News 'Look Back' movie director Kiyotaka Oshiyama revealed that he had been working on the movie until yesterday, one day before the early premiere today and hasn't left the office in over 2 months

1.7k Upvotes

Director Oshiyama said, "I was drawing until noon yesterday. Then, I heard that there was an event today, so I didn't have any clothes to wear, so I worked hard at noon and at night to buy some. So everything is new," he said, drawing everyone's laughter. "Even the staff haven't seen it yet." Looking back on the production, he said, "It was just extremely tough days... It felt like I was doing a hard triathlon. Every day was so thrilling, and it's only just finished... It's still too soon to have ended, so it doesn't feel like it's over yet, so I thought that having everyone see it today would finally make me feel like it's over," he said with a wry smile. "I was drawing until yesterday afternoon, and finished yesterday night. I stayed at the office all day for about two and a half months. Finally, I went home yesterday and slept in my own futon. I think I've accumulated quite a bit of sleep debt," he said with an exhausted look on his face.

Discussion ReMonster the overpowered MC done wrong.

This anime is overpowered MC done completely wrong. Not to mention how the MC is a creep and predator and how the side characters get no development. This anime feels like there will never be any challenge or turmoil that is not easily overcome. I understand he’s supposed to be OP but come on it can be done much better than this. Maybe I’m alone on this do others feel the same about this one?

Discussion I almost dropped Dungeon Meshi, and I'm so glad I didn't.

I remember when I first heard about Dungeon Meshi. It was just a show that was coming up for Winter this year. I had never heard of the show prior to this, and based on the premise and PVs, I thought it'd just be another fantasy show that didn't really need to be a fantasy. Or one of those shows that use Fantasy like a skin because that's what sells. This isn't inherently a bad thing, but those shows usually don't offer much in terms of the fantasy setting. In another subgenre, it'd be like A Faraway Paladin being an isekai but seriously didn't need to be at all.

I remember expecting it to be something similar to Campfire Cooking in Another world. I mean, the title "Delicious in Dungeon" Doesn't really tell me much.

The only noteworthy thing I found about the show was "Oh, it's by Studio Trigger a pretty famous Studio," but this didn't really hit me much because... As I've come to realize, I had never seen a Studio Trigger show before this! I dabbled in an episode or two of Darling in the Franxx, but that was it.

Anyway, another noteworthy thing I found was when I first saw the KV reveal, which looking back was honestly pretty neat, I noticed that so many of the comments referred to this as one of if not their favourite manga of all time. And I was just left at a strange feeling of confusion. I've never heard of this manga before... Ever. And yet, somehow, everyone who's read it holds it on such high regard.

Manga is such a weird thing because it always seems to fly under my radar compared to anime. There could be some kind of mega diamond in the rough that everybody loves, but I haven't even heard of it before because the community is so tightly knit.

Also I will say, prior to the anime blowing up, I found the fanbase to be incredibly chill. Though as things went on... To you OG source readers, your enthusiasm and love for the series really does shine through, and to those who spoil or soft spoil every episode, ya really need to chill with that. Episode 12 or m 13 would've hit so much harder if people prior didn't keep half spoiling like "Ooooh, I wonder what's gonna happen laterrrrr. Surely nothing bad's gonna happennnn wink wink," like bruv, stop.

Anyway, I remember watching the first few episodes and thinking that it was a pretty nice and fun show. I thought it had better world building and set designs than Campfire Cooking, but Campfire had the better looking food. Looking back, it's almost nothing like Campfire Cooking aside from the part where they food (and even the type of food they cook is completely different), but back then, I still had that expectation going into it. I forgot when exactly I stopped comparing, but at the start every episode I went in trying to compare and contrast two shows that I thought were going to be very similar.

By that point in time, I was also getting a bit of an anime burnout so I was ready to drop it once I got to the halfway 13 episode Mark. I originally, for spring, thought of picking up only 5 shows and Dungeon Meshi was not one of them. This is hilarious looking back cause I then tried watching the first episode for 40+ shows when Spring actually started. Anyway, I it was better produced than a lot of other anime out there, but nothing about the story was really gripping. Still I kept going and once I reached the Episode 13 Mark, I decided this show was definitely worth continuing past that point.

When it comes to similar experiences, the closest I can think of is when I first watched FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood. For both shows, I wasn't really hooked early on. I could tell it was good, but it wasn't anything I truly thought was special. And before I knew it, when I looked back after reaching a certain eoside, I was already hooked. For FMA that was Episode 37 and for Dungeon Meshi that was the episode where they spent the entire time focusing on the perspective of a completely different set of characters that I found was still engaging.

And now... The show has not yet ended, but I feel I can definitely say that Dungeon Meshi is my favourite Fantasy Anime the past 2 years. I'm pretty sure Next year's crunchyroll anime awards will have Frieren win, but man- Dungeon Meshi is just a whole different experience and would definitely have my vote. Random side thing, I'm so relieved Re:Zero isn't airing this Summer, because I don't know which I'd vote for it CRAA if Re:Zero Season 3 aired at the same time as Dungeon Meshi. Still, Reddit's AOTY is gonna be a nightmare for me.

I must say, last year I thought was pretty dry in terms of Fantasy. Frieren being the obvious winner, but this year... There are so many good ones coming out!

Back to Dungeon Meshi, the world building in this show is phenomenal. It feels so rich and vast and the way they explain the "science" behind everything makes it feel more like a nature's documentary episode than a fantasy show. You forget these things aren't real and it starts to look more like a possibility, like an alternate reality.

The "food" are also insanely creative. The delicacies they can cook up with pretty much any creature can make you salivate. The risotto one in one of the later episodes made me laugh out loud. Just by the way they were cooking, I could tell it was gonna be a risotto and to see them actually name it one is fun. Also the Sky Fish and Chips! I'm not British, but I cracked up.

But even beyond the food, just the overall biology and ecosystem of the Dungeon is very well designed. The frogs having protective skin against poisonous vines, the muscles living inside the living armours, the dragon sack containing gas and their mouths having a "click" to spark it. It's brilliant! This show is absolutely brilliant!

And it's not just the world building that makes this show feel so alive. How the mangaka manages to balance out the perspectives of so many interesting characters and give them depth is fascinating to watch. Not just the main character's party, I found that all characters introduced had something I interesting about them. They all offered something in terms of exploring the world, but the story never forgets that these people are characters that need characterization too. It really makes you think of the "everyone is the protagonist of their story" line.

One of my favourite examples of this is Kabru. Kabru is awesome! I love how he overanalyses people. The way he deduced a lot of Laois' party's movements were downright scary much like a certain scene in an Episode of Oshi no Ko (OnK watches, you know the episode), it reminded me of that! He greatly parallels Laios, but it also shows why exactly he can't be the one to take down the Dungeon. During the Episode where they fought the Mutated Falin, Kabru's first choice of attack was to go for Falin's vitals. He attacked her based on his knowledge of human anatomy, which of course failed miserably. They never mentioned it, but it was so in character for Kabru to choose that course of action. His lack of understanding towards the dungeon creature and the system of the dungeon itself makes him incompetent to reach greater depths, even though in a completely different setting, he would annihilate Laios.

I think the moment "world-building" becomes great for me is when I can feel the world existing outside of the characters. When the world feels so fleshed out that cultures can exist and will exist even when the characters were currently following are long gone. I felt this way with Frieren, Mushoku Tensei, Made in Abyss, The Lord of the Rings, Re:Zero, and now ofc, Dungeon Meshi.

But... yeah, I think Dungeon Meshi is my definitive pure fantasy anime of all time now. I have not yet read the manga, I'm an anime-only, but even if the story doesn't pull any more massive plot twists and just continue with this quality for the anime, I know I'll be giving this show a solid 10/10 in my list.

Also, I want to compare Dungeon Meshi a bit more with Frieren. I know comparing two shows is generally frowned upon because both shows should be judged with their own merits and whatnot, but since I view these two as absolute 10/10's and both acting as pure fantasy, I can't help but want to compare them seeing how different my experiences were. I find the idea of analysing what makes them tick so fascinating through comparing and contrasting what they do to work.

For Frieren, I already gave it a 10/10 in my list, but it feels like a completely different type of Fantasy from Dungeon Meshi. If I were to say, Frieren does more in the way of using the fantasy element to tell a human story. It feels more like a life anime using the fantasy setting as a tool. Frieren herself being the best example of this. The author using an elf as the fantasy element tool to explore the life of someone outliving her comrades and how that affects her. It's a beautiful thing and when you walk out of the show, you're left with this profound and greater appreciation for life.

Dungeon Meshi, on the other hand, feels like fantasy itself is the center of the story. It's not a tool to tell a story, the fantasy world is the story. Every day we just learn more and more about this world in a way that goes deeper than most other fantasy shows are willing to do. Watching everything unfold is enough to tell you that the author of the original manga loves the world they built, they have so much to say and so many things to share. Instead of the Fantasy being used to serve the characters, here we have the characters feeling like they're here to serve the world.

Our main cast is all serve in exploring different aspects of the world

  • Laios is here to tell us everything we need to know about the monsters.

  • Marcille Teaches us the magic system and the greater ecology of the Dungeon.

  • Chilchuck explores the socio-political side of the world as well as the "rules" and culture around adventuring.

  • Of course, Senshi is here to tell us all about how to cook good food.

They all work together to teach us more about the world so every episode, we always come out with something new. It's SO FUCKING GOOD!

Anyway, rant over. Dungoen Meshi peak, you should go watch it if you haven't already.

Ah- one more thing, seems like Frieren's usage of its magic system or world building(?) is more on the soft side of the spectrum while Dungeon Meshi goes HARD on it.

Discussion Golden Time was frustrating to watch

I have seen fair share of rom-coms from the past decade and Golden Time was in my PTW for quite a long time, finally got some time and decided to watch it. Initial premise was fascinating, characters being in college was something refreshing and cast seemed interesting. But I couldn't be more wrong, everything went downhill in the second half and weird ass ending soured everything about the story.

First of all the entire ship of Koko and Banri seemed so toxic, she changes her opinions over everything instantly and never seem to be on a right track. But above all her constant yelling was just difficult to watch. I can understand the author using it as a flaw to make her a better character but it didn't work for me and felt more like half hearted attempt which didn't get proper conclusion. [Spoilers]I just hated how Koko broke up with Banri, author depicts them as adults who can solve their issued with mutual understanding and talking it out, how she trusts Banri but everything was all of a sudden gone and she started treating him as a friend with no proper reason to him. Like what happened to her character growth.

Secondly, characters gets some role but they never get to finish their part of the story. It's like the story is filled with poor plot twists and piror story gets forgotten due to that. This show has a lot of arguments but never seem to conclude in a proper way. For Instance [spoilers]How Linda and Mistuo all of a sudden became friendly especially how Linda wasn't comfortable with Mitsuo, Oka being mad at Banri then it got resolved easily, Mitsuo having heated argument with Banri but everything is fine with laughs and how the story main plot twist was solved with a single mail. Why does Linda suddenly choose to confess "Yes" to Banri as he's running to meet Kouko? Why does his original personality even come back when it chose to let go? Everything happens so quickly in this series and it breaks all the tension.

Lastly, I felt extremely cheated by this series, because they spend so much time "developing" the characters but by the end, everything is solved magically. All the solution to their problems doesn't come by hardships but it comes magically, through spontaneous and sudden laughter and tears. It's absolutely ridiculous that they took 20 epsiodes to make you believe that these issues are present in the story but nothing ever mattered. I was planning to watch Sakurasou, but for some reason went with Golden Time. Hopefully Sakurasou will heal me from the frustrating experience.

I'd love to know your opinions about Golden time and if I am the only one who felt like that with GT.

Discussion Prompts

Each day I will post discussion prompts for the following day, for those who like to prepare their comments in advance. Feel free to answer some or none of them in Saturday's post.

  • Why "fairy"?
  • Comments on the use of the BGM music?
  • Given the casualty rate we saw at the beginning, do humans belong in this war?
  • What sort of pilot can coldly observe the slaughter on the battlefield?
  • What do you think of the relationship between Jack and Rei
  • Why can't Jack and Rei understand each other?
  • What is Yukikaze thinking? What is Yukikaze up to?
  • What are the JAM?
  • What do you think of this series? It certainly is atypical.
  • I know this isn't what you were expecting. Nobody could expect this. Will you be sticking it out? Or is this a hard drop?

Tomorrow's Discussion Today

  • [Operation 2]Jack really seems to want to get his people out of harm's way. Yet he is adamantly opposed to an unmanned Yukikaze. Did he change his mind?
  • [Operation 2]Rie was intentionally and covertly connected to Yukikaze during the trial. What was the reason for it? Was Rei controlling Yukikaze's attack? Or was it the other way around? Rei says it was like a dream.
  • [Operation 2]What did you make of Rei's dream(s) of Yukikaze
  • [Operation 2]Lynn Jackson is back. What do you think of her segments?
  • [Operation 2]What is the greatest threat to the FAF right now?

Trivia

  • A sylphid is an air elemental envisioned by the 16th century occultist and physician Hoenheim of Light Paracelsus.
  • Some people think these are fairies. But this is a fairy.
  • After 33 years of combat, out-of-sight and out-of-mind, the FAF has become a dumping ground for Earth's undesirables. Personality disorders are common.
  • Booker knows calligraphy, and painted Yukikaze's name on the nose.
  • The official language on Fairy is an English pidgin.
  • Everyone sent to Fairy receives a commission, "but someone's gotta be the ensign" — Brannon Braga so the rank is meaningless.

Discussion Can you recall any anime shows from an anime?

I’ve recently watched Saiki. The little boy that Saiki saved, showed him his favorite anime show: Jump! Cyborg Cider-man No. 2. It was so whacky and I couldn’t stop laughing.

Do you remember some other anime that had their own anime shows in the series?
